Stewed Pears with Honey & Cinnamon: A Traditional Chinese Medicine Recipe for Autumn
As the weather begins to cool and the air becomes increasingly dry, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) encourages us to adjust the way we nourish our bodies.
Autumn is associated with the Lung and Large Intestine systems and the Metal element. It is a season characterized by contraction, inward movement, and letting go. The Lungs are considered particularly sensitive to dryness, making autumn an ideal time to incorporate foods and practices that nourish fluids and support the Lung system.
One of my favorite simple examples of Shi Liao (食疗), or Chinese food therapy, is the humble stewed pear.
Supporting Your Immune System Naturally This Season
As the seasons change, it’s a good time to think about how we can support our body’s natural defenses. A healthy immune system depends on many factors, including adequate nutrition, restful sleep, stress management, movement, hydration, and a well-balanced diet. High-quality nutritional supplements can also be a helpful addition to a wellness routine when chosen thoughtfully and used appropriately. These are some of Dr. Wendy’s Go-to’s for keeping the immune system strong.
Autumn According to Traditional Chinese Medicine: Nourishing the Lungs, Letting Go & Preparing for Winter
There is something unmistakable about the arrival of autumn.
The air becomes cooler and drier. The days grow shorter. Leaves begin to change color before eventually releasing their hold on the trees. We naturally begin spending more time indoors, slowing down, and turning our attention inward.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), autumn is a season of transition—one that invites us to gather our energy, nourish the body, protect ourselves from the changing environment, and release what we no longer need.
Rather than resisting this seasonal shift, TCM encourages us to move with it.
